One can certainly
claim that the new double album of Nahush Charim
(Nalchik) – “Hopes bring me back to life” and
“Begin with Kafa” is unique. Not a single
Caucasian singer yet had a chance to present
records of such high professional level. Also,
the song “Adiga Pshaha” was accompanied with a
video clip that one can call the first
professional video on the Caucasus.
How Charim managed to elevate Adigha music to
such a level, he is sharing with the portal
Kavkazweb.net:
All of these
became possible only thanks to my close friends
that I would rather call my family – the
Khapsiroqwas. They helped to make my dreams come
true, the dreams I thought of as impossible and
fantastic. It is a very high responsibility for
me and I am working really hard to make sure
nobody is disappointed in the end.
The disks contain
only new compositions. After both of my parents
passed away, it was incredibly difficult to come
back to music. But since I am back on track, I
am determined to assemble a flawless repertoire:
it is not enough to like either music or lyrics.
Both have to be in absolute harmony because it
is how the sound and meaning get expanded to the
point as to reach each and everybody among my
audience.
Your album
also presents many traditional Circassian tunes.
This trend is visible in works of many modern
singers.
For me it is not
just a trend or fashion. Since the first day I
stepped on the stage I devoted all my efforts to
bring our heritage back to life, and back then
it was quite a new approach. Working on the
songs and tunes of our forefathers – one of the
major points in my whole career.
All your
compositions are full of special audio effects.
Have you had any concerns in regard to the
experimentation: your audience consists of many
traditional listeners?
No, I was not
worrying about that. In fact, all the worrying
is already in the past, when we were recording
with Timur Lostan our previous compositions. We
didn’t want to stick only to the limited number
of traditional musical instruments because were
trying to expand our audience, and, you see, new
instruments is a great way to help these new or
non-traditional listeners to understand our
music. Many people who do not understand
Circassian language tell me that they simply
love my music, my songs. Music mustn’t have
language barriers. Hearing such kind words from
them only tells me I am walking the right way.
Besides, the special arrangement effects helped
us to attract our own young generation- this
sound is very close to them.
Tell us the
story with the composition “Mom” and how did you
get Jivan Gasparyan to record it with you?
Some people think
that I was trying to obtain a world-known
musician to make my album flashier. But it is
not true. After I wrote the lyrics, I forwarded
it to Diabrail Haupa and his song Anzor who gave
it a final “shape”. I am absolutely grateful to
them that they truly understood my feelings. I
am still morning the death of my mother. My
whole soul was crying and I wanted to write a
song to get this pain across and out. Out of all
the instruments that Jivan Gasparyan plays,
duduk seemed to me to be the most “crying”
one.
Another
touching composition is “Sleep my sweetie”. It
Is dedicated to your daughter?
Ah, this song has
an amazing story. After my mother passed away,
sharp in 40 days, hour by hour my daughter
Assana was born People say that during these 40
days the soul of the deceased is still with us
and I am certain the soul of my mother is in my
daughter. They are so much alike! When I heard
the song, I knew I have to sing it. I am
grateful to the authors for being able to tell
what a joy it is to see our children growing.

Why for the
video clip you chose “Adigha Girl”?
I think anyone in
my situation would have done that. Since the
ancient times it has been out tradition to
praise the beauty of our women. My dear niece
Janna embodied all the noble qualities of an
Adigha Pshasha in this video.
Will the
Diaspora be able to access your album? What are
you undertaking for that?
We translated all
the composition names into English. The old
generation remembers the language, but
unfortunately, the youth has lost most of it. We
were hoping that with the translation of the
names they will be able to pick at least several
beautiful words of our language. We did it just
for them.
